Florida Parents Not Doing Their Job

June 3, 2008

Each year, more Florida children are becoming overweight. Parents are not encouraging their children away from the computers and t.v., so the state has stepped in to see that public schools help do the parents’ job for them.

Elementary and middle schools are now required to have P.E. classes for a continuous 30 minutes per school day.

Class schedules will have to be reorganized and we will see cuts in the Fine Arts and/or Core Subject areas.

I understand that fitness is very important, but do we really need to cut computer lab or reading time for something that could easily be done before or after school? If the government wants to impose, maybe instead of taking time away from children’s education, the state should mandate a continuous 30 minute health class 5x per week for parents. What are your views?

There should be fitness/pe and recess in school. If I didnt have those in elementary and middle I probably would have been a huge problem child. I also think the FCAT is dumb. I never had to take it and honestly I think I am better off then the kids today. Some people really suck a taking tests but are brilliant people. Ok wrong subject. Yes most parents teach their kids horrible eating skills and exercise, but regardless there should still be that outlet during the day to release your frustrations and your over learning mind. Plus it’s a chance for kids to hon their social skills.

    Heather,
I am in agreement with you. I am sick of FCAT this and FCAT that. Half the school year is used up with FCAT test taking preparedness. I am not the most intelligent person by far, but I am a GREAT test taker. 4.0 grade point average in high school and nearly in University. This does not mean I learned anything- I’m just a great test taker.
As a substitute teacher for many years, I feel that having PE daily would benefit the students health, social skills, and also get that blood flowing so they are up and at ‘em back in the classroom.
